Santiago offers this useful information on the Fuego in Argentina:

The production began in March of 1982, before of this, some Fuegos were imported from France. The local version was made to replace a car derived from the AMC Rambler Rogue, called here IKA Torino (Indsutrias Kaiser Argentina) a car of 240 kms/h top speed,(in Argentina Renault and Kaiser were associated)
The Fuego GTX had only one engine, called "J7T", or M2000, a 2.0 liter and 103 HP. The gear box was named NG-3 with 5 gears. In Argentina was the rival of a Fordīs model called Sierra XR4, locally produced too. This Fuego developed a top speed of 180 km/h, an acceleration of 0-100 km/h in 11 sec. Later, in 1987, Renault Argentina modified same aspects of the Argentine Fuego. The new model was called Fuego GTX II 2.2. The "new" Fuego adopted an onboard computer, a new dashboard, a new engine a 2.2 liter (2165 cm3) derived from the original 2.0 liter engine. This engine had 116 HP @ 5500rpm. With this engine, the top speed was nearly 190 km/h, and the Fuego won the title of Argentina's Fastest Car. One notable modification was the disc brakes at all four wheels - something absolutely new in our industry.
On the Raceway, Renault Fuego is today the car that more times had win a championship. Official Renault team, directed by Oreste Berta, with Fuegos with 2.2 engine, two carbs, some work on the camshaft and the exhaust, made a 240 HP engine. Still an excellent performance today. Fuego won in 1986-1987-1988- 1989-1990-1991- 1992-1993: 8 championships!
Finally in 1988, Renault modified again the Fuego, the new version was called Renault Fuego GTA, influenced directly by Alpine GTA. A very pretty car, the difference was the exterior because the interior and engine was the same.
In 1990, appeared the Fuego GTA max, with a new suspension kit, new shock absorbers by gas, the 2.2 liter engine, in this case, had 123 HP by a different camshaft, the top speed was 205 km/h, and 0-100 in 10.8 sec. This version was the only that was made until 1993. A great car! the best car made in Argentina!
